English Language & Literature-in-English

English Language is a core subject taken by all students at St Michael’s College. Being able to communicate effectively is of obvious importance to the young people studying at the College, and the students realise additionally that success in English helps their progress so much in other subjects as well.

And of course, being a good communicator helps immeasurably in every-day life and has the potential to enrich the quality of living through the enjoyment of not only literature and drama but also the mass media.

Further as English Language is a pre-requisite for many tertiary level courses, the students at the College strive for competence in this subject.

English Language covers five aspects:

Grammar – which is geared towards enabling the students to express themselves very well in English.

Literature – which enhances creativity as well as developing creative skills and appreciation of works of art.

Vocabulary – which acquaints students with words used in other fields of study or areas of life.

Oral English – which encourages students to pronounce English words correctly.

Writing & comprehension – which enhance creativity in expression and the assimilation of a wider range of words, phrases and stylistic devices into communication.
